NEWS - Free Beer Movement and Freetail Brewing Company Announce World Cup Collaboration Beer

A World Cup beer year deserves a World Cup beer. We're pleased to announce an exciting collaboration between Free Beer Movement and San Antonio's Freetail Brewing Company to produce a brew worthy of the competition going down in Brazil.

Introducing "We Are Going To Braz-ale" a Super Patriotic Red Ale.

"Braz-ale" will be a hoppy red ale similar to Green Flash Brewing Company's "Hop Head" Red. The SPRA is being brewed at Freetail's brewpub location in mid-May to be on tap there during the United States run to World Cup winning glory in June and July.

While the beer will be restricted to taps at Freetail we're happy to announce a limited edition World Cup t-shirt is also available from FBM and Freetail featuring the label art of "Braz-ale" (order now). Screen printed on American Apparel 50/50 blend shirts we think that it will quickly become a go to favorite from your drawer during the Cup and beyond.

Scott Metzger, owner of Freetail Brewing Co. and a board member of the Texas Craft Brewers Guide (who was instrumental in helping open Texas' beer laws in 2013) is a huge soccer fan and long-time friend of the Movement.

His brewpub in San Antonio is the perfect example of how well soccer and beer can pair. Soccer scarves hover above the brewery's big screen projector screen, often showcasing the world's game.

If you're in Central Texas during World Cup time you owe it to yourselve to check out Freetail Brewing Co., watch some soccer, and have a pint (or two or three) of FBM and Freetail's "We Are Going To Brazil" Super Patriotic Red Ale.

Wrong Side of the Pond’s American Soccer Pub Atlas

We've partnered with the American soccer blog, Wrong Side of the Pond, to help promote and contribute to their "American Soccer Pub Atlas" project. Certainly there are several listings out there (some pay-for-play and others, incomplete), but WSOTP's project is grassroots, crowd-sourced, and more specific than any other out there today.

Want soccer fans across the United States to be able to find soccer-safe-zones? Places where newbies can be introduced into the American soccer wild? Find a pub on the map for yourself and your newbies. Your local watering hole not on there? Contribute to the map as well.

All of this can be found on Free Beer Movement's "Resources" page. Not only do we have the Pub Atlas, but loads of other beer and soccer links for every FBMer from newbie to expert.

Last, but not least, check out Wrong Side of the Pond.

NEWS/VIDEO - Clint Dempsey Announced as 2012 U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year

From U.S. Soccer

"For his excellence at the highest levels of the sport, U.S. Soccer announced U.S. Men's National Team forward Clint Dempsey as the 2012 Male Athlete of the Year. Dempsey led U.S. scorers in 2012 with six goals, including five in the Semifinal Round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. The forward was also a big part of the USA's memorable win against Italy on Feb. 29, tallying the lone goal in the 1-0 victory in Genoa. He now has 30 goals in his career, tied with Brian McBride for third all-time. In England, Dempsey concluded his career at Fulham as the team's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League before moving to Tottenham in August in one of the highest-profile deals ever for an American abroad."

Plus, a Q&A with the man himself.

Even a cameo from "Deuce Face"!

MLS Madness - Get Your MLS Playoff Office Pool Started

The Major League Soccer playoffs begin tonight. The race for the MLS Cup starts tonight with the Houston Dynamo facing the Chicago Fire at 8pm CT on ESPN. The two Eastern Conference foes will play to earn the right to battle Sporting KC in the semi-finals as apart of the new American playoff system unveiled last year.

With playoff fever reaching fever pitch why not get a little office pool going to heighten the stakes? Your workplace is full of potential soccer newbies and there's nothing like a little water-cooler-match-day banter to peak up interest.

Just think of it like March Madness where even the non-basketball fans get swept up in the spirit of competition (even if there's not a lot of mascots to choose from) with a healty wager.

Practice what you preach all-season by continuing to use the FBM Philosophy. At the FBM's place of work we're offering a six-pack to the bracket winner.

MLS has made a easy-to-print bracket for you and your co-workers to get in the game.

And join us on Twitter by using the hashtag #MLSMadness to let us know you've started a MLS Madness bracket challenge with you and your friends.

Today’s The Day….

Remember me? (Photo Credit: ISIPhotos.com)

Editor's Note: This is our "get fired up" post for US international matches. We re-post it for every US match. Share it with your friends.

Today's the day the U.S. Men's National Team takes the field in a World Cup qualifier on their road to Brazil 2014.

Today's the day they face Antigua and Barbuda in North Sound, Antigua.

Today's the day we take the win and move on to the next match.

Today's the day that Howard will shine, Dempsey will lead, goals will be scored, and timely tackles will be made.

Today's the day we sit down with friends and fellow soccer fans and cheer on our team.

Today's the day we invite someone new to come along and experience the power of a soccer match.

Today's the day they'll get a free cold one to enjoy while watching the sport we so desperately love and the team we'd follow to the ends of the earth (or Brazil!).

Today's the day we ask a non-soccer fan to join our footballing family.

The Free Beer Movement is about spreading the love of American soccer to all corners of the nation and no day is better than today. Today, the pride and joy of our nation's game takes the field in order to continue its push towards the greatest sporting spectacle of all-time, the World Cup.

The past, present, and future of American soccer all take the field today to join in one cause, to win, and to move on to the next level.

It is days like this we, as American soccer fans embrace, as our national team fights for our country's continued respect on the international stage and to stake a claim as the best team in North and Central America.

Games like today are bigger than any game; bigger than any MLS game, and bigger than your son or daughter's kick around in the park.

Our local colors blend. There are no more yellow and black of the Columbus Crew or orange and white of the Houston Dynamo or the black and red of DC United; today there is only RED, WHITE, and BLUE.

These are the days that our nation's best and brightest shine on the field for 90 minutes. For themselves, for soccer, but mostly for you... the American fan and their country... the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

These are the days that you have to get up as a soccer fan in America.

So grab you friends, grab those soccer fans, grab those ones you want to become soccer fans, and most importantly grab some really cold beers because today's the day we support our National Team and our national game we love so much.

D.C. United Players Just Want to Bang on the Drum All Day

When most professional athletes (and European soccer players) can't suit up for a game they're usually seen living the good life up in a luxury suite with the owner and/or their wife/girlfriend, but not Major League Soccer players.

If you want more evidence of why American soccer is so great look no further than scenes from last Saturday's D.C. United home match against the Seattle Sounders. Despite the 0-0 scoreline defender Brandon McDonald, who was suspended, and midfielder Andy Najar, who was sick, took the the supporters section to bang on the Barra Brava's drums alongside other supporters, the Screaming Eagles and La Norte.

Players joining the supporters during matches are nothing new at D.C. or even the rest of MLS. The most famous example of an "off-duty" MLSer is, of course, our main man Frankie Hejduk slamming beers with Columbus Crew fans before a match against Los Angeles he was suspended for.

American soccer might be getting bigger and bigger everyday, but the league players continue to be as humble as ever. Signing autographs forever after matches and at practices, showing up at local bars and restaurants and mingling with fans, even buying everyone in the room Chipotle.

This is American soccer and the closeness we, as fans, feel to our teams and players is one of the most vital parts of what makes our version of the sport, and it's authentic growth, so enjoyable.

VIDEO - All Your Base Belongs to MLS and adidas

Many Americans continue to wonder about Snooki's weight (98 pounds!) who's going to be eliminated next from "The Voice" or what twists and turns will happen next in "Game of Throne"/"Madmen".

The computers, well, are preparing to take over the world. The upcoming Major League Soccer All-Star Game on July 25th in Philadelphia will feature the first world's first "smart soccer match" where all the players on the field will be tracked by adidas' miCoach system and the data will be available instantly for analysis.

Sounds pretty cool. Hopefully ESPN gets some of the data to share in-game with views.

We're just glad they didn't call it SkyNet. We're safe for now.

Right?

NEWS - Montreal Impact Is Coming at MLS Like The Crusades Or Something

Whether your speak Francais or not, it's not hard to pick up on the "Middle Ages Crusaders" theme that new boys Montreal Impact are bringing to Major League Soccer. The intimidation and the audacity is set pretty high, but why not?

The idea even reminds us of a little "Phun With Photoshop" we did on Impact coach Jesse Marsch a few months back after he cleaned up at the Expansion Draft.

Montreal you can drop the compensation check in the mail.

A few more posters after the jump...

NEWS - From the Irony Department “Grown Ass Man” to Play for Video Game Team

The GAM in action. (Photo Credit: Seattle Sounders)

Former (we can call him that now, right) USMNT forward Eddie Johnson returned to Major League Soccer last week. The European (and almost Mexican) journeyman was selected by the Montreal Impact in an allocation draft only to be traded to the Seattle Sounders for Mike Fucito and Lamar Neagle.

If Johnson can find his form the Sounders attack with Freddy Montero could be one of MLS's most dangerous. Notice we said..."if". The bag was already mixed for Johnson's Sounders debut as he picked up an early goal in a pre-season exhibition match and a hamstring injury that would see him leave the match in the middle of the first half (for "precautionary reasons").

From the match report:

Johnson established himself early as a threat in the attacking third, putting consistent pressure on the defense.

In the 11th minute, he gave a glimpse of why Seattle actively pursued him in a trade with the Montreal Impact on Friday.  Taking the ball with his back to goal 40 yards out, Johnson turned a dribbled through the defense, doing a pair of step-overs before ripping a left-footed shot inside the left post for a goal and a 1-0 Sounders lead.

The best part of the whole move in Johnson returning to MLS (he played for the Wizards previously) is landing with Sounders, whose main sponsor (and on their jerseys) is Microsoft's XBox. In response to an interviewer's question in 2008 about which video games he liked to play, Johnson reportedly said:

"I don't play video games. I'm a grown-ass man."

Here's to hoping that someone in the Sounders marketing department has a keen sense of humor and signs Johnson up for a public appearance at some FIFA '12 XBox tournament in the Seattle area.
